about

This live EP contains three of four tracks performed by poet Kevin McNeilly and pianist Geoff Mitchell at the 2016 Guelph International Jazz Festival Colloquium, "Improvise Here! Profiles in Practice." "Embouchure" is the title poem from Kevin McNeilly's 2011 poetry collection; in performance, the text is disassembled and rearranged in response to, and as a set of cues or provocations for, a piano improvisation. "Blue and Boogie 1: Blue" is a version of a track from Ammons: A Sheaf of Words for Piano, which is a suite of text-piano pieces linked to the life and music of the great boogie-woogie pianist Albert Ammons (and available on Bandcamp). Geoff Mitchell improvises around phrases drawn from Ammons's recordings. "Four Out of Five Par(r)aphrases" is a suite of in-the-moment poetry and music, improvised on phrases and texts by the great Chilean anti-poet, Nicanor Parra, who had just had his hundred-and-second birthday. (The opening section is a live re-translation of Parra's "Ars Poetique." Other fragments and intertexts make their way into the performance, too, including work by A. M. Klein, Samuel Beckett and Geoffrey Chaucer. The suite concludes by reworking parts of Parra's "Imaginary Man.") A fourth track, an improvisation on "Like Someone in Love," was performed but isn't included here. There were no microphones, and no amplification was used: everything's acoustic.
